Lehua Kamalu is a native Hawaiian captain and training navigator aboard Hokule‘a, the historic Polynesian voyaging canoe, and her sister canoe, Hikianalia. After nearly 10 years of training, she became the first woman to captain and navigate a long-distance ocean voyage when she sailed Hikianalia on a 2,800-mile journey from Hawaii to California in 2018. She currently serves as the voyaging director of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, under the mentorship of world-renowned navigator Nainoa Thompson.
Join Lehua to learn about traditional Polynesian navigation and voyaging, and hear all about her adventures at sea. After her lesson, she’ll answer YOUR questions, which can be submitted live in the chat bar. This event is recommended for middle school groups and will be held at 2pm ET on Thursday February 24th and Thursday March 17th; please register for the event that works best for your class! A recording of the event will be available to watch on-demand on our YouTube page if your students cannot attend live.
#ExplorerClassroom is for everyone! All events are free.
There are two ways to participate in the virtual event, as a featured class on screen or watching live on YouTube. If space is available, you may request to be a featured class during the registration process.
